History Beneath the Casemate Ft. Monroe
Part of the Ft. Monroe Series
Most of us who live in the area are familiar with Ft. Monroe – the fort with the moat. I had the opportunity to visit the tunnel under the Casemate Museum and was entranced by the quiet sense of history. The walls are multi-colored and textured brick red stone, green and black soot from the fireplaces.
I saw it as background for soldiers I imagined manning the 32 inch cannon and writing letters home. Some of the collaged letters are copies of the original documents left behind in boxes when the Army left Ft. Monroe in 2011. Thus this series Letters from Ft. Monroe.
