At my age, why am I starting a cartoon series …
It took me 4 years of shlepping myself up to William and Mary College in Williamsburg (about 30-45 minutes from my home) while dealing with a new home, two babies, and a husband trying to start a medical practice in a strange land, to finally be awarded my Master of Education in guidance and counseling.
It took me only 30 minutes after being offered a part-time job as an illustrator in the newsroom of a twice daily local newspaper to accept their offer. Thus began 48 years of the most creative time of my life. And now at an age in which most of my peers are playing around in retirement villages or not doing very much in nursing homes, I have upped my painting game to a new level. I’m finally putting together my cartoons into format available online. So, I can hopefully share my point of view with the world.
I call my cartoon series, “In It Together.” My hope is to bring a smile to all of us surrounded by increasingly dismal local and world events piled onto normal personal and family stresses. As the title suggests, disability, age, ethnicity, or gender should not be the focus of my comedic effort, but just an indication we are all in it together.
Cartoons are not a new genre for me. I already have a large body of work of cartoons created in the 1980’s. When I reviewed many of those cartoons, I realized they were like what I would draw today with minor cultural changes. People have not changed that much. I hope you will enjoy the view of my world – one that does not include slapstick humor or demeaning people in subtle but acceptable ways.
This is my heart project. It is not for profit so I can do what I want without deadlines or any obligations. With each cartoon, I’ll be adding my back story and comments. If you enjoy these cartoons, please tell your friends, follow me on Facebook and Instagram, and send my little attempts at humor around the world!
You can’t keep grandma down now that she’s got her leathers.
Stay tuned each week as I introduce a new cartoon on my website, Facebook, and Instagram.
